Gradually, I’ve got interested in visiting off the beaten path places, where ethnic minorities managed to preserve their culture and traditional way of living. I realized that it were them, the people I met, who made my travel experience so precious and unforgettable. Meeting indigenous people living in remote places, listening their stories and taking photos of them became the most inspiring part of my journey.'

'La première moitié de notre vie est liée à des événements qui nous bouleversent. Nous avons besoin de faire un travail de symbolisation intense de ces événements, notamment parce que beaucoup sont nouveaux pour nous et transformateurs, comme le fait de se mettre en couple ou d'avoir des enfants. Les objets techniques, comme la photo et la vidéo, sont des points d'appui pour intérioriser et transmettre cette vie psychique.'

Jan Stel explores abandoned places of our times, a forgotten world where mankind has disappeared. His photography is made in natural light, no flashlights or studio lamps.
'The human eye is far more sensitive than a camera lens and picks up minor as well as major differences in a scene. Because the photo camera is limited in its ability, I capture the image in multiple exposures. The scene my eye has seen and that which the camera is unable to pick up is what fascinate me. I want to reassert this sensitivity. I do this by brushing the photographed brackets into a sort of light painting, similar to what the dark room photography masters and painters of old used to do.'
